It hit me that Dick Tracy (Warren Beatty, Madonna) is an almost musical. The songs, written by Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim (West Side Story, Gypsy, etc., etc.) are entirely thematic, and do pertain to the characters singing them, but only two characters do so— Madonna's Breathless and Mandy Patinkin's Eighty-Eight Keys. The songs don't advance the plot, though they reveal the natures of the two characters… it's just that Patinkin's character is increasingly minor, and we never hear anything from the leading man, the love interest, or the prime villain (well, aside from Breathless). There are some good bones here to build on, but Beatty doesn't do that. Shame. Could have been a better show. |
