I have replaced some mini's in my armies, but it wasn't due to quality. I sold off some, and then, later, I replaced them. I did, however, replace them with figures which were closer in size to the 1977 1e AD&D Monster Manual's proportions.

I decided I wanted to see them the way Gary Gygax envisioned them. I wanted to return to the roots for my fantasy miniatures. It's been a fun task to look up the sizes, in feet, and then convert them to millimeters, to locate appropriately sized miniatures. I believe Gary Gygax used readily available 54mm toy Cave Men miniatures, for Hill Giants. I also believe he used commonly available 60mm toy Vikings figures, for Frost Giants.

Many of the other races are a bit of a mystery, but I do know that it was common practice to use smaller, historical human miniatures to represent Elves. I would estimate that a 20mm Human figure would be roughly the correct height for an Elf, if a regular Human was 25mm tall. I believe some early Dragon magazine articles specified using 20mm Robin Hood and His Merry Men figures for Elves. Cheers!
