I am a sniper. So much for joining Snipers Anonymous.

I became one for all the reasons listed in a post by Derek Hodge. I bid what I am willing to pay for the item. If I am beat by another sniper, so be it. He/she wanted it more.

Sometimes I do bid early. I will bid an amount that will determine if I am going to have to snipe later on. That is, I catch the twits that can't make up their minds, nibblers. Nibblers ofter quit bidding once they have the lead. When they realize they have lost the lead, they start nibbling again. I will look at my competition's bidding patterns to see if I can form a strategy.

I have also caught shill bidders. Unfortunately, since Ebay makes more money as a result of shill bidding they are unlikely to do anything about it. Technically, Ebay is breaking the law too.

Ebay will report that they have banned the buyer. Excuse me, but isn't it the seller that should be banned also and reported to authorities??? I've caught 4 bona fide shills. All of these were two-bit shill jobs, often with the buyer not even knowing that they were victims. That's why nothing usually happens. Unless you do something like the ring that got busted a year or two ago.

They were selling expensive items and using shills to push the price up. It was because the amount of the shill bidding was costing buyers thousands, the FBI got involved.

POLL DESCRIPTION

In online auctions, sometimes you can purchase items at a fraction of their actual worth, because nobody is bidding against you.

Do you ever bid on an item, not because you want it, but just to drive the price up?
