In general, labels are ugly. I tend to avoid games which might require them, as I think the label detracts from the aesthetic. Fortunately, Warmaster units can be easily distinguished by color choice when painting.
I do like the idea of placing simple terrain features on a base. A simple expedient of a tiny rock glued in any of the four corners or four edges of a base could easily distinguish multiple units from each other, especially if you extend the system to include multiple rocks in patterns (as 1 Rock right fore corner, 2 rocks rear center, etc.).
For Warmaster, I've considered creating simple pennants that could be stuck into holes in the middle of the base to temporarily track wound states during extended combat, but given that wounds don't hold over from turn to turn, a tiny micro die placed by the unit works just as well, isn't obtrusive, and doesn't remain on the table long enough to detract from the look of the battle.

For Napoleon's Battles, scenarios came with little unit labels to cut out and tape to the bottom of command stands. I've seen FOW players do color-coded bases. I used to make squad markings on my 40K troops. Do you and, if so, label or identify your units on the tabletop? I was going to title this "How do you label your unit?", but that's just too easy.
