It's probably best to define 'Toy Soldiers' in this context as something like 'Primarily metal figures, 54mm and up, often replicas of older models, painted in a deliberately toylike style, and featuring a strong element of nostalgia'. I've never been to a show that only featured these classic toy soldiers, but I've attended mixed shows that had them, together with the far more detailed and elaborately painted 'connoisseur figures'. I like them a lot, and went through a phase about fifteen years ago of painting a lot of replica Britains figures, mostly British colonials, with glossy varnish and pink cheeks. Very relaxing painting after doing highly detailed work. |
