Depends on how you paint, Walrus. I prime black, but put at least 2-3 layers, so white, for example, is going over an intermediate shade like grey, or light brown.

I've seen a number of people over the years who swear by auto primers on metal figures…shrug.

I used gesso for years, but after a-b'ing it with Vallejo surface primer, I've stopped--just too thick and grainy. For things like an overcoat, it's fine, but for Perry plastic faces, which are very small, I found it makes a big difference.
