Another vote for Taylor Anderson's Destroyermen series. Griks, 'Cats, Silva, Petey, Lawrence, Doms… Lots of great sculpting potential, and the battle attire ranges from WWII BAR to muskets, crossbows and spears… and that's without considering the sea and air conflicts! Peashooters, P40s, PBYs, grikbirds, dirigibles, side wheel steamers, 'Cat Homes, the Walker, Grik "East Indiamen," etc… It's a gamer's dream war!

I'll also vote for Phillip Reeve's Hungry City Chronicles and Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan trilogy as prime candidates for original models and great conflict settings.
