Do Moby Dick, the film the Seven Samurai and the 1970's children's series Mr Ben really qualify as "ancient" stories.

Of course not. Unless by "ancient" the OP simply meant "old" or "pre-1980." wink

Note that the film version of The Seven Samurai is based on a much older Japanese story.

Which story was that? To the best of my knowledge, Kurosawa drew upon a variety of sources as inspiration for his original screenplay, including his love for Impressionist paintings, kendo, Dostoyevsky, and Western movies by Howard Hawks and John Ford. He set the story for Seven Samurai in 1586, during the Warring States period. Granted that was quite a long time ago, but not really "ancient" in any meaningful sense of the word.
