Admirals view ships from the sides. Wargamers view ships from the top.

Therefore, an easy way to distinguish two fleets is to paint them with different deck colors light tan versus medium tan, for instance. Not historical, but practical.

If you have more than two fleets, then it gets complicated (how many shades of tan are there?).
