I have to fall on the traitor thing here – if he just up and deserted or left the Imperial Army to fight for his homeland (like that Washington fellow), hero would be OK – but to conspire to ambush and murder troops he was serving with moves him into the traitor camp

Plus which, he did wind up being murdered by members of his own tribe

A firm favourite with the Nazis but you can't hold that against him. Was the leader of the Cherusci in the Teutoberg Forest battle a hero and patriot or a deserter and a traitor? Given he was a serving Roman officer at the time, I think a good case could be made for the latter.
