I suspect my answer is close to Beethovens view of him. Love him, then that love reduces to feel somewhat betrayed by him.

As Maine said in one of the first responses – he did betray the revolution, or the principles of the revolution, however as I kept finding when I read about him – yes he did, but he had some virutes I think I can understand.

He was driven, he took things very personally, never felt truly accepted, he held grudges and he – in equal part – hated, resented AND i think secretly envied the monied and aristocrats.

For all of these reasons I feel I can relate to him a bit – and like Beethoven feel like i loved and have been betrayed, but i suspect theres still a lingering flame deep down…. :) (cue symphony #3)

It seems you either love Napoleon, hate Napoleon, or don't do the period.

Which are you?
