I use three colors of sand, as well as some model RR ballast, mixed together. I paint the base with wood glue, then I dunk them in the mix -- no painting required.

I also sometimes add in some pebbles to represent boulders. These I will apply The Dip to, to give them some shading, and to darken them just a bit. Cheers!

To what extent do you allow Nature to do do your painting? When landscaping figure/vehicle bases with pebbles and twigs, do you leave them au naturel or paint them Stone and Fallen Log colors?

I used to add all that stuff last and call it good, but now I add it all but grasses prior to priming, and thus paint it.
