If you were looking to a website to ask questions about games, books, rules, etc.

Would you prefer to have a discussion board where anyone can post, or would you rather have an email address to send a question to- in which case if the question was a new one it would be posted along with the answer on the website.

I am wondering if the idea of having a phpbb board or yahoo group is really more trouble than most people care about.

Boards can be quicker, but not always right. If it's a rules question on the company site, a note on a book on the author's site – something directly pertinent to the email reciever – I like sending the email. If it's more broad like a painting question, fantasy football advice, I like a board.

Oh, should have added as a webmaster: boards may seem like less work at first (people ask questions, others answer), but watching for legal problems can take a lot of time if the wrong crowd wander in.

Moderated boards for me.
