Today is the 70th 'birthday' of the Spitfire – 5th March 1936 was the first time the 'Spit' flew.

I'd like to say a big 'THANK YOU' to RJ Mitchell for this wonderful "baby".

Happy Birthday 'Spit'.

I am lucky enough to live 2 miles from where its maiden flight took place and will be looking to the skies at 4.30 this afternoon…

My son just made his first airfix kit completely on his own including painting and decals and it is a spitfire. I am so proud. I am not really into planes or any military machines but the beauty of the spitfire is outstanding.

Hats off to the Spitfire and the boys who flew them!

What a great trooper of a fighter that filled it's duty admirably. Imagine had something less desirably made it through the selection process, and the RAF been plagued with mechanical difficulties, adjustments, etc.

Hats off as well to the crew chiefs and mechanics who took care of the craft while the pilots were getting a bit of sleep for the next day.
