…In The Past

"Even to our more recent ancestors, the modern American plate would likely be unrecognizable. Gone are the TV dinners and congealed jello salads. In their place are raw fish poke bowls and flaxseed smoothies.

America's diet has changed dramatically over the last few decades. We're eating more chicken and less beef. We're drinking less whole milk but chowing down on more cheese. We're consuming more calories overall and snacking more frequently…"

Tomatoes were once considered poisonous. Does that count?

Tomatoes are poisonous! (Well, the leaves are…)

I had a family member who went overboard on tomato juice, and it caused swelling – had to quit it.

Too much chicken and not enough beef to my thinking. We won't mention tofu in polite society.

Sushi was once indescribably foreign to Yanks, now it seems semi-ubiquitous, at least the rolls with lots of veggies, no raw fish, and tons of gloppy dressing, what the Midwesterners will buy (me, I'm a solid nigri and sashimi man). You can get bland sushi rolls in grocery stores around here now. And all-you-can-eat lunch specials in the sushi joints (even tho' these cater to the lowest common denominator).

Shag, tofu can be quite tasty when it's prepared well, with some seasonings and grilled/fried to a sprongy texture -- not unlike a sea scallop.

Eggplants were considered poison too…
