Nifty story. Did the makers know this would happen, or did they just luck out?

A lot of early metalworking was trial and error. You remember what works. I'm surprised this technology didn't spread, though, since it's pretty valuable. Perhaps the metal produced with this method isn't suitable for tools and weapons.
