Not that it exists, but a mechanism for apparent "fire breathing" would be a forcible release of methane followed by some sort of exterior sparking system to set it off— like the old do-not-attempt-this "aerosol can flame thrower." If the gas pressure is sufficient and forcible, the creature's body need not ever be in contact with the flame. Of course, once it starts a fire, the creature had best leave the area itself! So as a naturally occurring defense/offense, it's not a very viable one. Having a defense that is likely to kill oneself is not generally conducive to passing on one's DNA so as to have a sustainable species. |
