What a surprise! As described in this article : link Taken from The Independent, a UK Newspaper of Note. |

It has been a long time since I've read The Simarillion. I don't believe the Second Age, described in the article, is covered by that book. The Second Age begins with the War of Wrath and the destruction of Angbad and ends with the fall of Numenor, (I think). Considering the time frame this has the potential to be a very depressing series. |

I'm not seeing any crowds clamoring for the Silmarillon, let alone "Dad's notes". Those are for hard core Tolkien fanatics. LOTR had a big following, from stoner hippies and outward. This will only puzzle those looking in vain for hobbits and Gandalf. Someone is wasting Amazon's money, big time. Not that that's a Bad Thing. I can write in advance the shrieks of horror as the Holy Book is altered to fit the needs of filming. It will be entertaining. |

There will be conniptions. But the show won't necessarily be bad. The way LotR is written it's really far from being movie-like. But they managed to make a decent set of movies out of it. And look at how far apart are the movies and text of The Hobbit. So if this show is The Silmarillon, which I couldn't get myself to read, it's going to be, necessarily to my mind, even further from the text than The Hobbit. Which means they might make a really good show. Or not. I remain hopeful. If it's no good I won't watch it. If it's good I will. If it's different from The Silmarillon I won't know until someone tells me. And absolutely regardless of what they do someone will be frothing at the mouth over the heresies. Young people think that's serious. Older people think that's funny. Really old people like me don't bother to give that any mental room at all. Maybe they'll put Tom Bombadil in. That would be fun. |

The published Book under the title The Silmarillion also contains the sections entitled: Akallabêth – recounts the rise and fall of the island kingdom of Númenor, inhabited by the Dúnedain. After the defeat of Melkor, the Valar gave the island to the three loyal houses of Men who had aided the Elves in the war against him. Through the favour of the Valar, the Dúnedain were granted wisdom and power and longer life, beyond that of other Men. Indeed, the isle of Númenor lay closer to Aman than to Middle-earth. The fall of Númenor came about through the influence of the corrupted Maia Sauron, the chief servant of Melkor, who arose during the Second Age and tried to conquer Middle-earth. and Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age – covers elements of the 2nd and 3rd ages. So the Quenta Silmarillion (which is another section of the book called The Silmarillion) is still up for grabs being 1st age. |

I'm not seeing any crowds clamoring for the Silmarillon, let alone "Dad's notes". I don't know – imagine The fall of Gondolin: loads of Dragons being whipped on by dozens of Balrogs, plus hordes of Orcs. I'd watch that. |

So would I, but what about the ignorant masses? . Would they? We already know that Horrywood is capable of cgi dragons. |

Thanks 20th Mine. It's been a couple of decades since I read The Silmarillion. |

Hopefully not. I can't imagine sitting through 400 episodes of begatting. |

I hear that watching begatting is quite popular with some people…. |

Begetting was quite the thing on Game of Thrones. |

Doesn't matter what it is based on, Silmarillion or not. If the screenplay is well written and the production shows quality, then there will be an audience for it. |
