I sold some items on ebay. There was sales tax figured into the price. So does Ebay keep that portion, report it and make payment to the state?

That has actually changed recently, so you shoud look in the eBay documentation for the answer. Anything anyone else remembers might not be up to date.

Whatever entity collects the sales tax bears the legal responsibility of reporting and transferring to the correct state department of revenue. So, if ebay collected the sales tax, but didn't forward it to you, no problem. If you received the sales tax, then you need to contact your local state department of revenue for reporting requirements.

Ebay collects the sales tax when the item is sold It is the buyer( who pays it) as part of the sale. The seller does not have to do anything as eBay bears the responsibility if they collected it of paying the respective state.
