I don't watch much crime on TV; certainly not American crime shows. My tastes run to classic Sherlock Holmes-style shows though if I want raw violence & action, I'll watch Nero Wolfe. Thus, my viewing of the TV show, 'The Rookie' is uncharacteristic. I came to it because of Nathan Fillion. He & the rest of the cast are quality. It's well shot & the premise is interesting , if a little artificial. But the background is either disturbing or ridiculous: I'm not sure which. The average soldier in a war zone would see less death & destruction. The police in the show are subjected to a barrage of shooting, death & explosions. Any real people would be suffering from PTS after a shift or two. Yes, I get this is escapist entertainment but if it's got any connection to reality (surely not), what a hell hole LA is & if it's pure fantasy, it breaks any possible credulity. I've watched a half a dozen episodes but I think I'm done. Any chance of Firefly returning……? |

My wife and I also watch "The Rookie." mainly because of Nathan Fillion. And I agree that it is very full of shooting and mayhem. Of course many "Hollywood" types just don't realize that policing, like war, is only a small percentage of murder and mayhem and a great percentage boring patrol work. Jim |

We gave up after the embarrassingly overblown pilot, Fillion or not. The writing was substandard and clichéd, while the character relationships simply weren't believable, seeming unnatural and forced. Bring back Firefly or Castle, or give Nathan something with better writers. He's to good for this schlock. Oh, and what about Whisky Cavalier? That was a fun show, but because it wasn't filmed at Disney, ABC canned it. I despise studio executives. But I guess they're proof that morons can get jobs. |

I can't remember where, but I read a stat that more people were murdered on British television (murder mysteries, etc.) in one calendar year than in real life Britain for the same period. |

And Nathan Fillion rocks. |

+1 Ochoin for Nero Wolfe ! One of my long-time favorites in both book and ensemble cast form on television ! |

As I indicated, I am no real judge of American crime shows but it seems I hit a stinker. Pity as the actors are good & the premise interesting. |

American cop shows are the TV equivalent of comic books. You watch them for fun so don't get too serious and don't try to analyze them |

I don't read comic books, either. |

If you want something more realistic, "Homicide Life On The Streets" was pretty good. Very few shootings, excellent interrogation scenes and some top-notch acting by great actors like Andre Braugher, Melisa Leo and Ned Beatty. It's long gone, but you can buy full seasons of it in the second-hand shops or on ebay. The early seasons of it are the best. |

I will second Nero Wolfe and add Nestor Burma and the long suffering Helene(available on utube). Dave |

I thank you all for the suggestions. Jim also PM'd with a recommended series. I'll look into it & see if I can find something to scratch the itch. …..Nero Wolfe. Whilst being suitably grateful for the Timothy Hutton series, I could wish it had covered more of the many SSs and novels of the genius, Rex Stout.

I have up on the remake of Hawaii 5-0 because of the silly amounts of shooting in that series, I think they might have mistaken Hawaii for Omaha beach on June 6th 1944. |
