Watching BBCs Serengeti.
The heiress of a spotted hyena klan is wounded. And several male lions show up.
To save the heiress the klan leader the mother sacrifices herself.
But not by going into action and fighting (something not that uncommon) but by laying down and letting the lions kill her. (In a total obi one kanobi move)

I know they say spotted hyenas are the most intelligent of carnivora, with more primate level social structures and intelligence.
But that's some next level shit, sacrificing herself for a grown daughter, and with no fight, that's a type of complex altruism you don't see in many species outside of higher primates, elephants and mabye cetaceans.

You have to be careful picking and choosing animal behavior that matches the best behavior in our species. Hyenas have a plethora of behaviors that seem to be similar to our own altruism and unselfishness. That doesn't make those behaviors good, it only makes them similar. Be careful of anthropomorphizing. Hyenas have also been observed committing murder. Just like us.

Every animal alive today is the end result of billions of years of evolution. Different species behave differently from each other and these behaviors are all successful tactics employed by these creatures in order to survive. It is estimated that 99.99% of all living creatures that ever existed are now extinct. So the .01% alive now are doing something right.

Some will sacrifice themselves for their offspring. Some do the opposite by killing their offspring in order for themselves to survive (with the caveat that they can always make more offspring later). We sympathize with the former case and are repelled by the latter. But they are both successful behaviors for survival. What we do works out for us. We can't expect other species to behave similarly.
