Neither is the guy in the new Hawaii Five-Oh McGarrett, but that show's been on for five years at least. The moral is that it doesn't really matter if the new character resembles the old because most of the people watching probably didn't watch the original version on which it's based anyway. And thank Gawd the new Magnum doesn't wear tight shorts like Tom Selleck did. His sassy British female sidekick's also easier on the eyes than the butler-like John Hillerman. |

I don't suppose it occurred to anyone at CBS that the one critical ingredient for the relaunch no one wanted or needed was someone with the boyish charm of Tom Selleck. That guy is as much "Thomas Magnum" as Bea Arthur. And if you needed further proof that he show was complete garbage: In one of the scenes I paused on while channel-surfing past, Girl-Higgins is "building" a model sailing ship. Because that's what erudite folk with crisp English accents do, don't you know. Only the prop used was one of those ultra-cheap imported jobs you see that look like it was assembled by a monkey with a hot-glue gun. Really, nowhere NEAR as nice as the ones you can pick up at Hobby Lobby for $30 USD with a coupon. So very lazy and sad. |
