Oh my!

Well, this must be the flop of the yuletide season, and deservedly so.

There are about 3 good gags in the whole film, 2 of them are in this trailer:

YouTube link

And if you say "but there weren't 2 good jokes in that trailer 20thmaine!" then that probably means that there will be, for you, one (or fewer) good gags in the whole film.

I had many many questions about this film, but probably the one that bugged me the most in the first few minutes was "why are they trying Moriarty for murder in a church rather than a law court?"

15mm and 28mm Fanatik29 Dec 2018 7:24 p.m. PST

H&W is pretty lame and deservedly a flop, but 'Robin Hood,' 'Mortal Engines,' 'Bumblebee' and ' Welcome to Marwen" are bigger flops due to their larger production budgets.

This is proving to be a brutal holiday movie season. Too many movies competing for moviegoers' wallets.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP29 Dec 2018 7:47 p.m. PST

You're right – H&W was only ~$45million to make, and looks to be heading for ~$20million in receipts world-wide (apparently). Bad proportionally, but not so bad in actual millions lost.

I think (in a way) it's actually too FEW movies – Mary Poppins and Aquaman seem to be cleaning up pretty well, and everything else has the feel of a second best choice. At my local cinema Aquaman had the best screen & time slots before christmas, Mary Pop-Pop got the best screen and time slots after christmas. Everything else is getting the small screens and/or the afternoon slots which just aren't so convenient. I'm not going to take an afternoon off work to see 'Tulip Fever' even though I would have gone to see 'Tulip Fever' in an evening showing.

(Does that make sense ?)

I was looking forward to this one, so it is disappointing. I understand it has a lot of "off topic" humor as well.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP29 Dec 2018 8:38 p.m. PST

If you mean a lot of "blue" jokes and significant reliance on poop, vomit and similar topics – then yes it does.

There's some slapstick that works – or would work – if they'd just let it be slapstick (at least some of the time) and not bolt on blue/poop/vomit as "icing". I'm not offended by blue/poop/vomit and the best joke (for me) did use one of those…so.

I didn't totally hate it, 2/10 maybe, 3/10 if I felt generous, it just could have been a lot better. There were a couple of cameos that could have been built up and would have helped – the lead actors weren't great and it's very "by the numbers" in the set-ups of visual gags particularly.

Winston Smith29 Dec 2018 8:57 p.m. PST

Has Will Ferrell ever had a decent … anything?

Phil Hall29 Dec 2018 9:47 p.m. PST

No he hasn't Winston. He is the most uncomedic comedian in the world today. I avoid any movie he is in.

Dn Jackson Supporting Member of TMP30 Dec 2018 1:08 a.m. PST

I'm not a Will Ferrell fan at all. However, I did enjoy 'The Other Guys' very much. Oddly enough I prefer the 'tv' version with the off color language removed.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik30 Dec 2018 11:36 a.m. PST

Mary Poppins and Aquaman seem to be cleaning up pretty well, and everything else has the feel of a second best choice.

That's the thing. On any given weekend, one or maybe two movies will command the lion's share of the box office receipts. We rarely even see two movies making over $50 USD million (or approaching that figure) in one weekend. So other movies released close to the top two grossing movies are behind the eight-ball fighting for scraps. If they release 'Bumblebee' at a different time, it would easily have been the #1 grossing movie on a weekend, but going against 'Aquaman' and MP it had no chance.

So it's a bad idea to release too many movies at the same time, especially big-budget ones, competing in the same window for audience money.

There was that funny or die sketch with the toddler playing his landlady, although it was the kid that made it funny.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik30 Dec 2018 2:11 p.m. PST

H&W was made because they thought 'Step Brothers' was funny. They're selling Ferrell and that other dude as a "comedic duo."

Bowman30 Dec 2018 3:35 p.m. PST

Earl, that was funny.

"I need to get my drink on!"

Earl of the North30 Dec 2018 4:57 p.m. PST

There is a second one where she is brought in to scare a suspect into confessing as well YouTube link honestly they may be the highlight of Farrell's career.

In San Antonio, the major theater chain in town has started a program to reissue a different older movie on Sunday and Wednesday with two showings each day. This week was "Die Hard" and next week is "Alien". I guess they figured getting 20+ people to see something they don't have to pay very much to run (plus of course the concession money) is better than an empty theater running the latest bomb.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP31 Dec 2018 6:11 p.m. PST

thumbs up

SalTony01 Jan 2019 6:05 a.m. PST

Who Greenlights these movies? are they all on drugs…..silly question. I love movies but to find one with a solid coherent story, no buildings being destroyed by actors in costumes or 70% CGI is almost impossible.
I went to see VICE and walked out halfway through , sorry I spent the money of some left wing Hollywood Directors wet dream.

Mithmee01 Jan 2019 7:59 a.m. PST

Yup, Vice is probably another movie that is going to bomb.

Easy to see what they are trying to do with that movie.

The best Sherlock Holmes spoof ever made is 1988's "Without a Clue", starring Ben Kingsley and Michael Caine. If you've never seen it, you're missing a treat.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP01 Jan 2019 6:36 p.m. PST

thumbs up

Without a Clue is everything Holmes & Watson isn't.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik02 Jan 2019 9:11 a.m. PST

If taking a selfie with the Queen of England
(whom Watson is infatuated with) or accidentally knocking her over with the camera isn't funny, then I give up.

picture

Mithmee02 Jan 2019 1:57 p.m. PST

It is not one bit funny.

This movie is nothing but horrible and thankfully will be out of the theaters very soon.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik02 Jan 2019 2:36 p.m. PST

If my obvious attempt at sarcasm didn't get through, then I surrender.

Bowman03 Jan 2019 3:19 p.m. PST

Actually that photo is cute……together with the obligatory duck lips. But one cute picture does not a movie make.

Full disclosure, I did not see the movie. But I did see the preview and that was enough!

altfritz08 Jan 2019 4:13 p.m. PST

The ONLY decent Will Ferrell flick is "Stranger than Fiction", where he plays the straight man, more or less.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP08 Jan 2019 4:49 p.m. PST

I will be the pedant – it really annoyed me that they went on the Titanic.

Duh!

Titanic – maiden voyage 1912.

Queen Victoria – died 1901.

I suppose HMY Victoria and Albert II wasn't fancy enough for 'em. frown

Mithmee23 Feb 2019 8:12 a.m. PST

Well it got nominated for some Awards.

6 Razzie nominations

Worst Film
Worst Actor
Worst Supporting Actor
Worst Director
Worst Screen Combo
Worst Remake, Ripoff or Sequel

Mithmee24 Feb 2019 8:20 a.m. PST

So the Razzies are in and…

Holmes & Watson wins 4

Worst Film
Worst Supporting Actor
Worst Director
Worst Remake, Ripoff or Sequel

So it goes down as the Worst movie of the year.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP25 Feb 2019 10:07 a.m. PST

How did it fail to take Worst Actor ? Who was worse than Will Ferrell ?

(goes and checks)

Oh, ok, I see.

Mithmee25 Feb 2019 8:12 p.m. PST

Yup, you got to remember who is giving out the awards.

They are not a great fan of a certain individual so Will got lucky this time.

With the way he is making horrible movies he will be back.

Bowman26 Feb 2019 4:28 a.m. PST

They are not a great fan of a certain individual so Will got lucky this time.

Not lucky. That award is aptly deserved. The same individual won Worst Supporting actor in 1990 for "Ghosts Can't Do It".

To get back on point, I've only seen the trailer. But just from that I understand the Razzie accolades.

Robin Hood was also in the running and I believed we discussed it's "qualities"
elsewhere.

TMP link

Mithmee26 Feb 2019 1:12 p.m. PST

Yes Robin Hood just got lucky that Holmes & Watson was made and came out in the same year.

Bowman26 Feb 2019 2:22 p.m. PST

Agreed.

Another film in the running for worst of the year was "Winchester".

link

Stars Helen Mirren as the widow of the famous gun manufacturer, living alone in her large rambling mansion. Even the trailer looked good. Apparently, the movie stunk. It didn't even play up here as far as I know. Helen ended up in the running for "Worst Actress". The Director was also in the running but just couldn't beat out the Director of W+H.
