Very cool. It's fascinating that Gondwana is just the last (or rather latest) of the super continents. It's hard to figure out how anyone can figure out how these older continents fitted together. link |

A lot of it is extrapolating backwards from modern continental drift rates and directions. I believe there is similar evidence for older versions of drift. A lot of it is a form of "fingerprinting" rock layers though. Basically "patterns" of rock are lain down such that the same pattern exists on two different continents. This indicates that those two continents were together when the pattern was laid down. Radiometric dating tells you when, and rates of motion and magnetic orientation of rocks gives an idea of where. |
