The hoard has been dated to the late Imperial era, which goes back to the 5th century. Theater jokes aside, this hoarding was probably a good idea. Rome was sacked in 410 (Visigoths) and then in 455 (Vandals). Invaders come through the Alps at the pass by Lugano and pass right through Como at the bottom of the lake. Maybe the hoarder didn't survive one of these incursions. |

Also, on more than one occasion the citizens were squeezed out of cash when the Emperor (or the Popes) paid the barbarians whatever "payola" they demanded. So people quickly learned to hide some of their gold from their fearless protectors. :) Dan |
