…. up in arms — all over again. "In the restaurant world, is there anything worse than a bad tipper? Try a bad tipper who dangles a few measly dollars in front of servers as an incentive for good service. At least, that's what the internet has collectively agreed. On Thursday, Mark Arum, a newscaster for WSB-TV tweeted about a now-viral Facebook post from someone who allegedly boasted about their success using a certain tipping hack.,.." "Mr. Pink" only tipped when he was told to do so by the boss. Me,I try to be fair about it. 10-15% of total tab. |

Wow, what a great way to enjoy a power trip at the expense of your fellow human beings! If you throw out the Golden Rule and that whole "sheep and goats" thing in Matthew 25 you can feel like one of the judges on a reality show! And all for just a couple of bucks! If you're not a fan of Jesus you'll need to ignore the idea of Karma or three branches of the eightfold path, etc, but you get the best service ever! Best of all, this is much easier than the old life hack for getting good service: look at the server and smile, genuinely thank them at each step, use phrases like "when you get a chance" and "no hurry" when you can. But that was a dumb system. The Golden Rule does not make you feel powerful, but obligated. No one dreams of waiting tables. It is good, honest work, it has its rewards, but it's not typically someone's first choice of career. Chances are your server works at least as hard as you and takes home less. If your job involves some sitting down, if you can afford restaurants, then somewhere along the line you were probably more fortunate than your server. If the server is not your economic equal, are they still equal as human beings? Apparently that question is up for discussion. We all imagine our selves to be good people. Tipping is one of the moments that is put to the test. |
