I found this guy crawling around my deck. My first thought it was a beetle, but the wife freaked and wants to "nuke from orbit" on the chance that it is a cockroach even near the house. Can you identify this bug?

It's a beetle. Possibly a brown click beetle (touch it with a stick; if it "clicks" and flips, it's a click beetle). But it also resembles a blister beetle, so don't touch it with bare hands! It could be a pine sawyer beetle, too. In any case, it isn't a cockroach. Here's a nifty website that might help you out (I narrowed the search down to North American beetles): link |
