In college many years ago, I wrote some term papers about apes using sign language, including Koko. Critics claimed these apes did not truly understand language and only mimicked humans. As I recall, Koko was given a radish, which she had never seen or eaten before. After taking a bite, she signed, "Cry hurt food."

Seems a very intelligent response to a first encounter
with radishes – I like 'em, but in tiny doses…
