So, this is the result of my latest project, fully discussed on my blog.
And yes, I created my own rules for the game (honestly, the others out there are less than stellar, IMHO).

Oh, and if I can do it, you can too!

I love all the chess variants. I too wanted the 3D chess set, and yes the Franklin mint ones are still pricey. I bought a cheaper version back in the day, without the battle boards. I still have it plus a spare board set I found at a garage sale. I intended to use it to make a star trek style board, but have never gotten the bits to do so.

I always thought that the 3D chess on Star Trek was simply a plot device to make Spock look smarter than the rest of us.
The next movie should cast Magnus Carlsen as someone playing 3D chess. He looks an awful lot like the dude who plays Dexter.

You are in part correct; it was indeed simply a prop intended to make the 23rd century seem even more intellectually advanced…or to at least allow the actors to "play" chess in such a way that no one watching could easily recognize that they weren't actually playing a real game. (I refer to this in my blog. It's also why there really aren't any "official" rules-- because there never were any rules when the series was filmed!)

UPDATE: I've added a more detailed 2-page written rules set to the blog. Doesn't really add anything, just clarifies details regarding castling and pawn promotion and so forth. Enjoy!
