Finally saw this movie with the most Oscar nominations this year (13). It is Guillermo del Toro's best movie to date (sorry, 'Pan's Labyrinth'). My impressions here:

Yep. Nominations were well deserved

I agree it is del Toro's best to date, but I didn't really care for Pan's Labyrinth all that much.

Shape of Water is excellent and I'll see it again.

I usually love del Toro's films (and wish he had done The Hobbit as planned!), but I found The Shape of Water to be really shallow (I know, I know).

Villain was two-dimensional at best, and didn't fit with the tone of the film. The spy b-plot was about as underdeveloped as the actual romance. Transitioned too quickly to "heist film!" mode without making their relationship feel organic.

"Splash" was a more believable romance, and I really wanted to like this one.
