This is how these creatures survived for hundreds of millions of years. North Carolina is cold enough lately to make this shallow water frozen, but if the gators can get an airhole for breathing, they survive by brumation (a kind of quasi-hibernation).

I haven't seen our neighborhood gator in two years now. With all the ongoing construction in the bayou behind the subdivision I'm sure she has moved elsewhere. She used to make a nest every year, though she was all alone.

They haven't taken down the beware of alligator signs yet though.
