… Movements, Sensing, and Control.

"A strong relationship between nature and technology plays a major role for developing robotic solutions being able to cope with uncertain situations and showing an effective behavior in our natural environments. Usually biological principles originate from animal models for robots that can walk, swim, crawl, or fly. In latest years researchers have started to study the plant kingdom identifying models for developing new technological solutions in robotics. Plants are able to move, control, sense, but they do so differently from animals or other living beings. In such vision, this special issue collects original research and review articles taking models from the animal and plant kingdoms, in three major areas of interest in robotics: movement, sensing and control. Movement, usually ascribed to animals, is also pertinent to plants that move in a very efficient way. New actuators and sensors mainly based on soft materials are addressed. Finally, animal and plant control strategies – with and without brain – can inspire new methodologies for robot adaptive movements…."
