Just the kind of article that drives me nuts.
A previously obscure star witt make a "close nncounter" with out Sun in about a million yearts, coming within a "trillion" miles or so.
Forgive me. Bunches os zeros mean little to me. How close is that in Light Years? We all know that Alpha Centauri is about 4 light years away, and we get that from general curiosity in reading science not in our field and sci fi. So, that context is missing.

But what really galls me is the automatic assumption at the end that Man will manage to kill itself off by then, with climate change, nucular war, voting the wrong way, etc.
They just can't resist, can they? I could read an article on the Albigensian Crusade, and somehow it will be blamed on Climate Change.

Bowman03 Sep 2017 1:07 p.m. PST

So your nose is out of joint because some blogger opines that humanity may not survive the century? Maybe the Ranting board would have been more appropriate?

John the OFM03 Sep 2017 1:13 p.m. PST

No, my nose is out of joint because some will blame the "failure" of any NFL team to hire Colin Kaepernick on climate change. It has become the Grand Explanation of Everything.

I once saw some bubble brained blonde on CNN ask if a comet striking Jupiter could be blamed on Global Warming.

Ranting has been merged with Science. Didn't you get the Memo?

It will be 0.0002381509130326 light years away. So somewhere between the orbits of Neptune and Pluto. But I am not to concerned about it. It happens in 1.3 million years. More than enough time for us to kill ourselves off.

Really? Could you provide a link the Kaepernick story?

Really? Could you provide a link to the "…bubble brained blonde" story?

"Ranting has been merged with Science." Ohhhh. Well that's easy to fix. Simply don't merge ranting with science.

Texas Jack03 Sep 2017 2:34 p.m. PST

mandt2, is John´s post really so offensive that it should cause you to rant in the Science forum? evil grin

altfritz03 Sep 2017 2:47 p.m. PST

Personally, I think Climate Change is all John's fault. Or, if not John, then Winston.

Cacique Caribe03 Sep 2017 3:10 p.m. PST

OFM: "I once saw some bubble brained blonde on CNN ask if a comet striking Jupiter could be blamed on Global Warming."

Lol. Priceless. I needed a smile. Thanks.

Dan

Winston Smith03 Sep 2017 3:36 p.m. PST

No. I don't have a link for that CNN babe. I SAW it. grin
That's the same Network that had its premiere prestige anchor ask if a Black Hole could have eaten that jet that disappeared over the Indian Ocean.

As for Kaepernick, he's a zone read quarterback. They're obsolete now. grin Until they're not. RGIII is better than him and he can't get a job either! So, blame Global Warming.

Cacique Caribe03 Sep 2017 5:19 p.m. PST

I thought it was all being done by the Russians. :)

Dan
PS. Is this one of those CNN nutjobs?

No, my nose is out of joint because some will blame the "failure" of any NFL team to hire Colin Kaepernick on climate change. It has become the Grand Explanation of Everything.

And then:

Ranting has been merged with Science. Didn't you get the Memo?

On second thought, the Utter Drivel board may be a better fit

Col Durnford03 Sep 2017 6:21 p.m. PST

I saw the same CNN report RE comet strike caused be AGW. At least I hope it was the same newsreader and there are not two of them that dumb.

Cacique Caribe03 Sep 2017 6:32 p.m. PST

Unbelievable!

nyt headline regarding the event – "Woemen, Children and Minorities hardest hit".

45thdiv04 Sep 2017 2:39 a.m. PST

John, what happened to your typing? Normally you don't have so many typos. I'm hoping this was perhaps a cut and paste error. But, it could be due to your blood boiling due to climate change. 🤔

Bowman04 Sep 2017 6:55 a.m. PST

nyt headline regarding the event – "Woemen, Children and Minorities hardest hit".

Couldn't find that at the NYT headline search. Do you have a date for that specific headline?

This is the closest match I could find

jdpintex04 Sep 2017 7:11 a.m. PST

Harvey was caused by the eclipse and removal of confederate statues NOT global warming.

Winston Smith04 Sep 2017 7:36 a.m. PST

"Women and Minorities Hardest Hit" for the NYT is the punchline of a joke about how major newspapers would handle the world coming to an end.
It's not real.

Bowman04 Sep 2017 12:00 p.m. PST

Thanks for that. I was confused about the spelling of Women. I assumed the quote was a slight on their editorial abilities.

Col Durnford04 Sep 2017 1:25 p.m. PST

More likely a comment at their actual news slant.

Personal logo StoneMtnMinis Supporting Member of TMP04 Sep 2017 2:29 p.m. PST

Just my fat fingers and it is a comment on their editorial bias in "news stories".

Bowman05 Sep 2017 6:40 a.m. PST

No worries.

Hey and there are rumours that Kaepernick is being shopped around the Canadian Football League. My team (Hamiltion Tiger-Cats, 1-8 record) already tried out and passed on Johnny Manziel.

Winston Smith05 Sep 2017 7:45 a.m. PST

If your team is looking for the second best out of work zone read quarterback, he's your guy.
RGIII is better, and he can't get a job either.

Martin From Canada05 Sep 2017 8:13 a.m. PST

My team (Hamiltion Tiger-Cats, 1-8 record)

So last night's win wasn't a dream… (I dozed off during the lightning delay)

Also, the shark picture is a fake

Is this one of those CNN nutjobs?

Dan you misspelled FOX. wink That's who Watters works for.

Seriously, I hope you are doing fine.

Bowman05 Sep 2017 10:59 a.m. PST

RGIII is better, and he can't get a job either.

There is talk of that too.

OMG! You're right! I looked into the abyss… :)

Well here it is. The "source" for John's "…bubble brained blonde on CNN…" story.

link

At least it was the only reference I could find.

Winston Smith07 Sep 2017 6:38 a.m. PST

Mexican Hack hasn't been around for a ehile, sadly. It was Texas Jack.
Yes. It was asteroids. You doubt my word, sir? grin

Anyway, there's a humongous solar flare headed our way right now. I wonder if that will be blamed on climate change too?

Charlie 1207 Sep 2017 5:52 p.m. PST

A throwaway remark is the cause of a rant? Wow, the standards for rants is certainty getting low here 'bouts…
