…First REsults "The Breakthrough Listen project, announced in 2015, is currently using the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, the Automated Planet Finder optical telescope at Lick Observatory and the Parkes Telescope in Australia, with plans to incorporate other large telescopes around the world.
The Breakthrough Listen science team has so far acquired several petabytes of data — available at breakthroughinitiatives.org — using these telescopes. The researchers designed and built an analysis pipeline that scans through billions of radio channels in a search for unique signals from extraterrestrial civilizations. "The basics of searching for signatures of extraterrestrial technology are quite simple," the scientists explained…" Main page link Amicalement Armand |

If interstellar civilization exists, shouldn't the universe be awash with significant signals? Think of just the cable channels alone… |

Well, that depends on a couple of factors, not the least of which being how far away from us are such civilizations? If we postulate that our own civilization will be capable of going interstellar in the next 500 years, our own historical signals still won't have reached more than 700 or so light years radius, and those will be weak. The same would be true of any similar civilization elsewhere— that is, they may well exist, but their signals are either too far away or too weak to reach us…or maybe we're just not listening in the right direction. The universe is a very big place. |
