The GREAT Al Jarreau. As a lifelong aficionado of jazz, his passing is particularly sad for me in that he was very successful in sharing the genre, whether traditional or pop-flavored, to a wide audience who might have never listened initially. Among his notable hits were 1979's "Little Sunflower", 1981's "We're in This Love Together", 1982's "Roof Garden", 1983's "Mornin'", and the theme to the ABC '80s comedy-crime drama 'Moonlighting', released in 1987. He also participated in the 1985 USA for Africa's music super-ensemble "We Are the World".

He was a standard artist of many smooth jazz radio stations throughout the country in the '80s and '90s. Throughout his nearly 50-year career he performed with such notable jazz artists like Miles Davis, George Benson, David Sanborn, Chick Corea, and Joe Sample. It was only four days ago that he cancelled his latest tour and announced that he had "retired".

Godspeed, Mr. Jarreau, and thank you very, very much.
