I did not know until recently that Glenn flew with Ted Williams in VMF-311 using the F9F Panther. This was before he flew Sabres with the Air Force. |

I loved how Ed Harris was almost a spitting image of Glenn in "The Right Stuff". His role raised my awareness of John Glenn noticeably. So, I bet Harris could write a good eulogy of the man he played. We all go. Ninety-five is a heck of a run. Now the cosmos is his playground……………….. |

A genuine hero. RIP. I hope, in the future, some type of spacecraft is named after him! It would be fitting. |

I stayed home from school to watch his orbits on tv. When I went in the next day, I brought my excuse to the teacher. "Oh, put that away. I know where you were." Yes. Always admired him. |

Those were the days – not quite glued to the tube during missions, but keeping a close eye on it. Definitely on hand for the recovery and seeing that the astronauts made it home. RIP |
Trajanus | 09 Dec 2016 2:16 a.m. PST |
His first space flight was heroic but returning to space for nine days at the age of 77, in a Shuttle mission, was amazing. They don't make them like that anymore! |

As others have stated he too was one of my childhood heroes. A great man who served his country for a long time. Sadly we need many more people like John Glen and they seem few and far between no of days. Rest well sir, you earned it. |

You've got to hand it to him -- he lived a much more dangerous life than 99% of Americans and yet he outlived 99% of Americans. Not too shabby! |

Rats. Ok, he made it to 95 so that is a plus. but man oh man do we need his kind today to be an inspiration as to how to live. Not just as a male but as a human being. The man answered his nation's call after the Pearl Harbor attack, served valiantly in the Marine Corps as a pilot becoming an ace in TWO wars. From that becoming a test pilot a difficult and grueling professing demanding both physical stamina and great mental skills. Then volunteering and being lucky enough to become one of the first of America's astronauts. From there he goes on to be a senator and vigorous defender of the nation's space program against such luddites as William Proxmire and Dale Bumpers. Finally at age 77 he puts a cherry on top of the cake of his flying life with a nine day flight aboard the space shuttle. BRAVO ZULU Colonel Glenn! Truly may we be worthy of all your achievements and efforts. Godspeed and fair winds Marine. Semper Fi. |

Oh a quick PS to the above. Onomarchos, Ted Williams was asked once near the end of his life wht he though was his greatest achievement was. He said that it was to be picked to be John Glenn's wingman in Korea. That says a great deal abot John Glenn in one moment. |
