Milt Moss, a comic actor who delivered the rueful catchphrase "I can't believe I ate that whole thing" in a memorable commercial for Alka-Seltzer in 1972, died on Sept. 26 in Manhattan. He was 93.

That commercial is a famous example of a popular commercial that failed to boost sales of the product (Alka Selzer).

Editor Bill, you are right that it didn't boost sales but you're wrong that it was ineffective. At the time of that commercial several new products were coming onto the market and Alka-Seltzer was an old product that was under threat. The commercial ensured that Alka-Seltzer hung on to market share for several years longer than was expected which was the objective, therefore it was a success. As you are undoubtedly aware preventing erosion of market share is often times more important than gaining market share. (This ad was the topic of a marketing lecture I had to sit through years ago)

Peter Boyle did a remake of it also.

Alka Seltzer and VW had the best commercials back then. I love the "Mama Mia, that's a spicy meatball." That one is the best.

I think this obit has been derailed :P
