Fidel Castro has died at the age of 90. Love him or hate him, he was a man who changed the world. We will no doubt argue over whether he was a good man or a bad one, but no one can really argue that he wasn't a great man. RIP, El Jefe. Rod Robertson. |

Let's just say that the reaction to his death will be "mixed" |

Let's see if people can keep it civil, although judging by the second post I suspect not… youtu.be/-BOVzAn3NpU |

I cannot share my true depth of feeling on this site. Suffice it to say I was a teen during the Cuban Missile Crisis and, thus, share ZULUPAUL's sentiment |

May the outpourings over the next few days also be a tribute to the Cuban people that lived and died during his time of leadership. God bless them all. |

You can argue about this one till we are all dead too. No one in Miami will miss him, there again I doubt many poorer Cubans who lived under Batista missed him either! I was around during the Missile Crisis too, for which of course we had a certain Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev to thank,as much as Castro. I don't blame Castro for what he did at the time. He was trying to forestall the US back lash at kicking their puppet out. Bay of Pigs anyone? The real villain was Khrushchev – his actions were those that could of got every one killed. I don't recall that Castro had a ballistic missile system of his own to threaten the US with! |

I've already seen a lot of posts about this on Facebook and other social media. The one thing I have yet to really see is the following significant facts: Castro took power in Cuba in 1959, the year I was born. I am 57 now so Castro pretty much held power as a dictator for the majority of my lifetime. This despite numerous attempts to have him assassinated, an economic embargo and ten American Presidential administrations. Perhaps only Ramesses II (also known as Ramesses the Great) had a longer run when he ruled Egypt for 67 years. The link provided by Oh to President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins' comments is a more nuanced response. Sadly the majority of my fellow Americans only see the world through a singular lens. In short, Castro stuck his thumb into the American eye and played David to our Goliath. That should be sobering to all the celebration that are going on in Miami right now. I can only hope for continued normalization of relations with Cuba which will do far more to lift up and aid the people of Cuba than all the political machinations of the last 57 years. |

As Bill Maulden said when Castro came to power: "He come out of the jungle like Robin Hood and then acted like the Sheriff of Nottingham". |

Don't see where being a Great Power puppet and proxy makes one great. Regardless, Fidel has presumably gone to his judgement and I would be surprised if he is resting in peace. |

Wow! Have the carefully considered words of the President of the Irish Republic speaking in his official capacity have been censored on TMP? Perhaps its a mistake? Or has Free Speech been suspended in a new rule change? If so its a pity, I for one never tired of hearing how important it was. Its like Joni said – "You don't know what you've got till its gone". Anyhow RIP Fidel. |

Hmmm… since my previous comment was deleted, I will say this: I have sincere hopes for the recovery of the Cuban people, upon whom the impact of Fidel Castro's reign cannot be overstated. The imprint of the Castro era will have a lasting effect on Cuba for decades to come. My thoughts and prayers are with them in this time of great change. |
