…Earth, new study finds. "While world leaders are discussing how to keep climate change within 2 degrees Celsius (2C) above pre-industrial, it's important to note that even the climate change we have already caused is having a massive impact on the planet. According to a new University of Florida study, global warming has already affected every aspect of life on Earth, from genes to entire ecosystems…" More here link Amicalement Armand |

How else would you describe a world that is sliding into "My uninformed opinion is superior to your hard earned expertise and careful study among the brightest minds in the land"? Where else is a 97% consensus on the broad lines of a problem "controversial" and the 1% of opinion is given equal weight? According to actuarial tables, I have a good chance of seeing 2050 (I'd be 61 when the calander turns to that date), and there are going to be a lot of fecal matter hitting the fan by that time due to climate. I guess you could include those nutters that want to believe that the invisible sky monster created everything in 7 days… but there's a large overlap in that euler diagram |

Too true, Martin. Anti-intellectualism is alive and very well, I'm afraid. I was going to make a comment linking your first post to a recent (3 weeks ago) event that was (and still is) in all the news, but that would definitely get me DH'd…. |

It's like that whole "bring coal jerbs back". Ok, maybe if you get government to subsidize the hell out of mining and burring into a giant hole, since the primary demand for coal – steel making – has tanked ever since China switched gears, and it's bringing down the valuations of coal companies faster than a blimp made of solid depleted uranium. Secondly, you'd have to turn back the clock with regards to mechanization and mountain top removal, which has increased yield per person/hour though the proverbial roof. What about steam coal… Well, on a per million BTU and per KW basis, combined cycle natural gas is MUCH cheaper to build, run AND maintain, as well as not producing toxic coal ash, not to mention that renewables, such as Wind and Solar PV, have slowly but steadily become more and more competitive – to the point that in April, nobody met the reserve bid for the rights to build a new coal plant in India*. And the new regime is signaling that it's going to double down on fracking, which will reduce the price of Natural Gas even more, and make the figures for coal worse…
link link link All in all, the collapse of coal is good for the environment, so long as methane leaks from fracking are kept in check. * There's currently overcapacity in the city where the plant was to be built, and by the time the plant would be needed in 10-15 years, solar and wind, even at half the yearly rate of improvement would be less expensive.

Coal was also undermined by the simple fact that natural gas is a lot cheaper right now. Those regions of the country should have actively transitioned away decades ago and now they're dying. |
