Most may remember her as the sexy Eva in the Spanish language version of 1931's Dracula.

For those of a certain age, opposite Gene Autry in South of the Border might even have more meaning.

I've heard many describe her version as superior, but I'm not sure I can be objective about Bela Lugosi and Edward Van Sloan. I CAN admire her work nonetheless.

Well done!

True,Carlos Villarias was no Lugosi. OTOH,Edward Van Sloan's performance is a bit odd--one critic pointed out that the end of some scenes left him standing there stiffly with his hands in the air, looking like a mannequin.

That may be the fault of the director. Tod Browning's reputation, once legendary, has fallen over the decades, as more of his films became available for study. The Spanish version has much more movement (Dracula actually rises from his coffin, for instance, something which Browning was apparently unable to perform).

Interesting article here:

Ultimately, it's up to the Drac fan to compare and judge. But don't deny yourself the experience.
