….one of the greatest movies ever made.

It's essentially Apollo 13 with different hardware, but that's ok.
Apollo 13 is up there in my top 10 also.

I like these sort of cliffhanger space movies. Apollo 13, Gravity and the Martian. All exciting movies. Yeah, the science is off on some of these. But I don't watch movies for a science lesson.

And I admit. No matter how many times I watch it, I still need to wipe my eyes and blow my nose and have a beer when he is captured.

Yes. It's manipulative. You got a problem with that?

Yep, a great movie.

The book is good, too, with lots more science.

Too much use of Disco music. They could have given us all a break in the ending credits music, but no, they had to cram more of it in. Otherwise, yes, a good film all around…….

The disco music is used because that's all he could find. It was among the captain's stuff when they took off. And he complains about it a LOT.

Somehow, the Disco music works with the scenes too. I thought it was pretty funny.

Best movie about space poop and space spuds I have ever seen.

I hate to say it…wait, no I don't. The book was better. And not just in the usual sense. What they added/changed, didn't need to be changed, or added. Subtracted, sure – him dealing with the trailer rollover only served to increase the time pressure, and the Hermes crew failure plan wouldn't have gone over very well. But the interactions on the ground, and the incredibly stupid end trick (they even said in the book, 'don't do that, it's incredibly stupid, and it won't work' – and this was a story about using science and careful planning to overcome obstacles), none of that needed to be done.

Still enjoyed it, though.

I felt that the movie was better than the book. In the book, Watney is a one-dimensional character with no soul. In the movie Matt Damon makes him likeable and believable. The scenes where he gets philosophical about what he's doing and the likelihood of his death are very moving.

I do like the movie quite a lot (and keep watching parts of it whenever I encounter it on HBO), although I do have a number of quibbles:

1. The entire crew lands on Mars leaving NO ONE aboard the Hermes in orbit?

2. Why did they bring a botanist to "a planet where nothing grows"?

3. If Watney didn't like Commander Lewis' music WHY DIDN'T HE BRING ANY OF HIS OWN?! :) That whole joke got stale after a while.

Still, a great movie. Of course, I like Apollo 13 better since it's a true story.
