Talking about Lucas and how he's a "revisionist". Talking about how Jackson screwed up Tolkien. Talking about crap CGI. And on the visible display of topics it spans today back to March 6th, I kid you not. Movies are not moving topics of conversation anymore…. |

I saw The Big Sleep (dir. Howard Hawks, 1946) for the first time recently. It's not new, but it certainly was good. Take a break from the new stuff, watch some old movies. They will restore your faith in the medium. Ron |

Just saw the 50th anniversary release of Sound of Music on the big screen last Wednesday with my daughter. It was very good. It's gotten to where I go to the local Cinemark to watch old movies more so than the new ones. |

Most of the new movies suck that's the problem. |

No they are too feeble to suck, they just lay there and stink up the place. |

Big Hero 6 was a superb film – almost as good as The Incredibles. The Imitation Game was a real pleasure – can't understand why BC didn't get any major awards for it. Testament of Youth was a very good film – not a bundle of laughs, but that's death in a muddy trench for you. Hoping to see Avengers – Age of Ultron this week, a relaible source tells me it is fantastic. Good enough for me! There are still plenty of good films – and yes, plenty of dire films (Project Almanac for instance). |

I've seen the Avengers 2, Great eye candy, lacking a good story. Frankly, if you have seen the trailers, you have seen the movie. |

I really enjoyed Hobbit Battle of the Five Armies when it came out last year,I do intend to see Avengers 2 this Friday and the movies I see have not disappointed me but then again I don't see a lot of movies so you could say I'm a selective moviegoer. |

if you have seen the trailers, you have seen the movie. Good – 'cos that's what I want from an Avengers movie! |

I saw The Big Sleep (dir. Howard Hawks, 1946) for the first time recently Remember seeing this on a big screen oh…must be…almost 30 years ago now. had already seen it at least half a dozen times (The BBC, bless their cotton socks, used to have regular movie seasons of classic film noire) but it really gained something as a cinema experience. Last winter the BFI backed a classic SF movie season at independent cinemas – saw some great films that way – including 2001 as it should be seen ! Great stuff. |

Lucky mad monkey. 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' isn't released here yet. As far as movies currently playing in theaters, there's not much worth watching unless you're just looking for some mindless diversion like 'Furious 7' or 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2.' But I just saw an indie yesterday that I would recommend, 'Ex Machina' starring Alicia Vikander. It's worth watching at least on rental or via streaming after its theater run is over. I'll be posting the following abbreviated review of it on my google movie blog (movies according to dave) later tonight along with two others. Ex Machina This much heralded indie sci-fi gem from British screenwriter and first-time director Alex Garland (28 Days/Weeks Later, Sunshine, Dredd) is a riveting slow-burner that's as cerebral as it is mesmerizing. A young computer geek (Domhnall Gleeson) is chosen by the brilliant CEO (Oscar Isaac in another fine performance) of a Google-esque company he works for to spend a week at the latter's secluded and highly secure retreat to conduct the "Turing Test" on the AI of his latest android Ava (Alicia Vikander). What follows is a fascinating series of interactions and conflicts building up to a delicious twist of an ending worthy of water cooler conversation. Enough said, go see it already.Grade: A

@28mm: There's something wrong about a sexy android that the protagonist knows is an android. West World and Future World played with that way back when and it bothered me then. Ilea and Decker sort of worked because he was willing to morph and meet "her" half way. Stepford Wives worked because we knew the guys were insecure creeps who would go for a programed "woman". But your review is interesting nevertheless…. |

There's something wrong about a sexy android that the protagonist knows is an android. Yet the human still falls for "her" knowing that she's not flesh and blood. Ava isn't entirely disguised as a human like other humanoids, but she's a great conversationalist and Caleb (the computer geek) despite himself gives in to her wiles. At least he saw her; Joaquin Phoenix fell in love with the voice of Scarlett Johansson's AI in Spike Jonze's 'Her' without ever seeing her face. Then again, you might say one's imagination is more powerful than his/her physical senses. See? Good AI movies make us ask "deep" questions about what it means to be "human." |

I guess in a world where insecure guys can "fall in love" with manikins, blowup dolls and voices on the phone, anything more exotic and animated is a given. But, there is still "something wrong" with it. It seems to me a very limited genre, yet it keeps coming back again and again and again…. |

That's the problem, there aren't many "new" movies I want to go see any more. I see maybe one or two a year these days, tops. They ain't making 'em for me. I'm not going to spend the money or invest the time in something that doesn't seem like a good bet. But "old" movies, I watch these again and again and am always discovering "new" ones. New to me. |

I tend not to watch very many movies but I have friends that are big movie buffs, so I rely on them for curation :) For what it's worth, I've enjoyed a fair bit of scifi recently: Gravity, Interstellar (which people here hated) and I thought Edge of Tomorrow was fantastic. |
Great War Ace | 04 May 2015 8:50 p.m. PST |
I have Interstellar, loaned by a friend. I've had it for three weeks now. I'll let you know, but I don't know when that will be…. |
