I have Excel and Word 2013. MS think you want to save everything to OneCloud or your computer. Just OneCloud, nobody elses cloud drive, just theirs. It is inconceivable that you would have anything stored anywhere else.

On the Laptop this isn't a problem, because Google Drive acts like another drive/folder. Fine, can just go to My Computer and save in that handy little subfolder which also happens to be a cloud drive. Google Drive easy to use on MS Windows.

Now I can open that file on my tablet using Excel for tablets (but see next para). BUT I can't save it to Google Drive. Why? Because Google have hidden Google Drive, buried deep withing Chrome WHICH IS PUBLISHED BY GOOGLE. When you do find it, after a tortuous path, each document has its own folder, with a name like 2he7whdhw8d28hh2hhsnm – I kid you not. You can't save to these so it appears in Google Drive.

Oh, the same with opening on a tablet- I can't see Google Drive in Excel, but I can open by opening the Drive, and opening the file that way. But because I can't save it is read only – so no editing on the go.

Of course Google can't believe I'd want to receive emailed documents in anything other than the manure-like 'Google Docs'.

"Its a Word Document. I have Word. Open it in Word"
"I can open it in Google Docs"
"I don't WANT IT open in Google Docs – you won't let me edit it."
"Howabout we download it to Google Drive"
"Howabout you Bleeped texting open it in a programme of my choice"

Everyone wants you to play in their particular garden.

There's no good reason, other than proprietary nonsense, that as a user, you shouldn't be able to just set your preferred applications for each type of file, like you can on a regular computer.
Very frustrating stuff, I agree.

Worse case, there's always other storage options, like Dropbox, though I don't know if it'd solve any of the problem since I've never used it on a mobile device.

Its for these reasons that I am considering going back to the Amiga, None of this kind of crap with a system that is all fan maintained.

I have a Dropbox, and am considering its everyday use. However:
It would mean a migration (though so would everyday use of OneDrive)
The reason for it was it was just for sharing stuff, keeping access away from my G-Drive.

I also keep it as backup backup for purchased e-files.

Its stupid- and big companies who can't imagine not being successful then can't understand why something doesn't sell. It leads to the rabid fanboiz of Apple, stuck in their own ghetto won't countenancer a different system.

Ya whatever, happened to the, "don't ask me again." box? Too many people checking it off?

Use Mozilla Firefox instead of Chrome.

I used bittorrent sync for a while to be completely out of closed cloud services but in the end, settled on dropbox due to being faster and easier to set up across multiple devices, which I do need.

I have a drop box account but I now find Copy better. They both work with linux too which is a help.

Linux compatibility is a must. Otherwise, no dice :-)
