What jolted me about the movie was that I had never made the mental image connection of Smaug "resting" in a hall.
I had always pictured in my mind's eye a simple cave.
what a forehead-slapping moment that was. grin

Sometimes December seems too far away…

I always wondered how Smaug got through the main entrance, based off of Tolkien's original illustration. Maybe I just wasn't thinking the mountain was big enough?

I think we all have myopia when it comes to scale in Tolkien – that hallway entrance must have been HUGE – so huge we cannot comprehend doors that large, or an open doorway that big. Impressive, waiting patiently for the film.

I just re-read the hobbit after I saw the movie. I always had an image that the hall was big. After re-reading the book, I had an image that it was incredibly huge. Smaug is sleeping in what would be known as the city square.

I don't think people realize how bigs things are in general. I mean the typical wargames table has trees that are pretty small when compared to what they should be to be in scale with the figures.

Look at some castle walls – they are freaking tall!

Erebor was one of the highlights of the first film – should be good.

I just noticed that, from the poster, the second movie apparently gets Thorin & Co. all the way to the Lonely Mountain. I had assumed it would end with the arrival at Laketown. It certainly seems that at least we'll see Bilbo contemplate the Great Gate.

That is a great hall!

The first trailer is also out today. The last bit shown reinforces the "BIG!"
