I got more than halfway through a DVD when it seized up. I had already cleaned the DVD before putting it in my machine. So I tried it in our laptop, then our desktop. It froze at the same place each time, can't fast forward or advance past the spot.

I've been having this problem lately with 1 out of every 3 DVDs from Netflix. I'm thinking of cancelling the service and going back to the old days – video rentals from a store.

Suggestions?

One of the reasons I went to streaming-only with Netflix. Every other disc was so badly scratched it was unplayable. Then they gutted their streaming selection and I dropped the entirely.

I've never had this problem except with one disc that skipped about 3 minutes or so of the movie no matter what you did. Out of 2 movies or more a month for a few years now it isn't bad.

I love the streaming too, they have tons of TV shows on there to watch and the new Arrested Development is great.

Sadly a legacy of some people not bothering to report an issue with the DVD becaue it's no longer their problem.

In the UK we have Lovefilm that provides a similar postal DVD service. Not sure if you get Lovefilm in the US but I rarely gat that issue, once every few months perhaps. Even then a good clean usually solves it.

We average 1 damaged disk a year, with 3-4 movies a month. We report each one.

My son gave me an idea that works on most scratched disks: polish the disk with toothpaste.

I guess it depends on what it is, I've had Netflix for 3 years and usually get a dvd each week. I've only gotten one DVD that was scratched badly enough to affect how it played, though I have gotten two that were actually broken during shipping. I reported them all and they ship replacements right away.

I've had some newly bought DVD's(from Best Buy,Barnes & Noble) that when I tried to play them,it comes up "NO DISC" on the TV screen.

I always give them a good cleaning before use. We have had 2 DVDs in many many that were actually bad. We reported both of them and NetFlix sent us a new one promptly. They also allowed us to check out an extra rental that cycle so we did not miss out on time.

I have never had that issue before.
But mine does show up shattered alot.
Postal service issue though, not Netflix's.

It got so bad back when I was getting DVDs from them I got a disk buffer repair kit and started using floor wax on them.

Only happened once, so far.

I've had two, but since the movies I get aren't a high priority for me, I just mark them as damaged via the website and wait for the next disc. for $7.95 USD a month, I really don't expect more.

What's a "DVD"? grin

The Elmo family cancelled Netflix DVDs a long time ago. Given that we basically watched 2 or 3 DVDs per month, it was more convenient to use iTunes and just pay per rental.

Only had the problem once in the years I've had Netflix.

Do you check each one on different machines or just this one? Sometimes you find the player is the problem.

I've played others that worked on some machines. This one I washed and cleaned, then played. It froze up on my DVD player, the laptop and the desktop, all in the same place.

Other times we didn't really care because the movie wasn't all that interesting. This time we both wanted to see how it ended…

I had one that was so grimy the DVD player locked up; I had to unlug the thing and plug it back in to get the disc out.

I've had Netflix for over 2 years now, and I think I've had a total of 3 disks that had problems (2 with severe scratches and one was cracked!). Netflix was able to send a replacement disk within a week or two. In the meantime my que kept me busy with more movies.

Overall, it's been a far better rate than renting videos at my local Blockbuster. I've had so many that were scratched (and some foreign gunk on a few) I pretty much stopped going there. At least with Netflix, I just dropped it in the mail and filed a claim on their website and didn't have to leave the house to get another potentially scratched disk.

We're on the 4 at a time plan and return 2-3 a year as unwatchable or broken.
