OK, so apart from upping the nudity count in the recent episode and a seemingly endless line in sadism, what the Hell is the point of the Theon Greyjoy story line in GoT? I know it drags across books 3-5 as well as the TV series but no one I know has an idea for the life of them why the author bumps of more prominent characters with total abandon while persisting with one who is clearly a waste of space. Any suggestions as to why and why HBO shouldn't pull the trigger on him anyway? |

I agree. I dont remember Theon in book three at all and I dont believe he was in four. It has been suggested that they added Theon to this season so he wouldnt take another job over the intervening years between seasons. |

As good a theory as any. The S.O. is equally confused. |

There is a SPOILER here. He has to vouch for the authenticity of a person who was alive at Winterfell when he was there. But, that's in Book 5, or if HBO follows the series in the future, 3 years down the pike. And, if they even follow that plot line at all is a mystery. I have also suggested that they don't want him getting another job in the meantime, but thought it was original to me. For now, he is being tortured by
SPOILER ALERT
Bolton's Bastard. (Or maybe they changed that too. ) Considering he betrayed Robb, and everyone thinks he murdered Bran and Rickon. What he is getting now is the least he should expect in a Medieval society. Whether he redeems himself in Book 6 is another story. Released chapters suggest that no one is buying any redemption. |

Isn't the whole point of Theon to tell the story of one who is rejected by [or lost to] both of his "families". (This from someone who has not read the books and is basing this solely on watching Seasons 1 & 2 of the TV show.) |
| Coelacanth | 17 May 2013 3:38 p.m. PST |
Whatever the point, with 11,312 characters to serve over 10 hours in a season, they are wasting valuable screen time on this particular sub-plot (unless the crazy torturer guy turns out to be the next King, in which case I shall egg GRRM's house). Ron |
John the OFM | 17 May 2013 7:13 p.m. PST |
I uneasily find myself in the position of defending GRRRRRR Martin, when he annoys the hell out of me. The crazy torturer is not a POV character in the book. Theon is, and we do not see what happens in the book(s). Let's just call it a case of Bad Things happening to Bad People, and leave it go at that. Interestingly enough, most of the nude dames we have seen so far have been Good Girls, or working girls. This is the first time I recall that we see nude skanks. Not that I'm complaining. |

Trajanus, this Theon story doesn't show up until book 5. Altfritz, that sounds entirely reasonably. Oh and I love the books and think the HBO series is just fantastic. Nontheless, I'll once again state that while I love his stories, I think GRR Martin is an inconsiderate knob who takes his fans for granted. -- Tim |

Trajanus, this Theon story doesn't show up until book 5. Do you mean its not an on going item until Book 5? According to the Wikis he is taken prisoner at the end of Book 2, Catelyn Stark discovers about him being tortured at the Red Wedding (Book 3), he is assumed dead in Book 4 and "the fun part" is all through Book 5. Apologies to all those avid readers of GRRM but I use the Wikis as a background compass to stay with the TV series – I would probably swap places with Theon rather than wade through the books themselves! :o) |

John, Interestingly enough, most of the nude dames we have seen so far have been Good Girls, or working girls. This is the first time I recall that we see nude skanks. I don't see Melisandre as a candidate for the Virgin Mary or have we not seen her naked? (There's been a lot of flesh in two and a half series!) |
| Trajanus | 18 May 2013 6:40 a.m. PST |
One point. I see a lot of reference to POV character(s) in the books and I think that a times the same people are swapped in and out of this writing style (?). Don't folks find it annoying that the narrative perspective jumps around? |
John the OFM | 18 May 2013 7:43 a.m. PST |
I only found it annoying in Book 1, with Sansa wandering around like a fairy tale princess, sandwiched betwween 2 realpolitik chapters. Later on, it becomes much less annoying. One example of Martin's POV is that although we have no POV for King Robert, all we know for a while is what an evil villain Rhaegar was, When we start getting other's views, we see that he would have been a much better king. And you are right about Mel. I forgot about her. It's hard to keep track of all the nekkid broads. |
DontFearDareaper | 18 May 2013 7:55 a.m. PST |
*** SPOILER ALERT*** I think Melisandre would fall into the nekked skank catagory. First time we see her in all her nudiness she is seducing Stannis and they do the nasty on his wargame table, then she does some nekked demon-birthing in front of the onion knight which really messes with his head.

MY wargaming table would collapse. It's a shaky and wobbly ping pong table. I was distressed by the cavalier manner in which they swept aside the miniatures. Some fell on a stone floor! |
| Trajanus | 18 May 2013 8:56 a.m. PST |
*** SPOILER ALERT*** I think that we should have a moratorium on "Spoilers" for GoT threads. Anyone can find out the smallest detail about the series, the books and every character in them with a couple of mouse clicks. There are no surprises unless you avoid the whole thing! There should just be an understanding that if you join a GoT thread and haven't seen any of the Series to date you may well find out something even if you don't have a clue what it means! |
| altfritz | 18 May 2013 10:25 a.m. PST |
Ah yes, Stannis' wargames table
have you noticed in movies the characters with the wargames tables are always the evil madmen? |
| Mr Elmo | 18 May 2013 1:35 p.m. PST |
I thought the whole point was to show his transformation to reek
it rhymes with leek. |
John the OFM | 18 May 2013 4:05 p.m. PST |
Stannis is NOT a madman. He is the only one of the 5 Kings I would vote for. |

Daenarys is getting right scary I'm liking her more with every episode. She seems to have a lot more brains than quite a few of the Westeros meat heads! |

I think that we should have a moratorium on "Spoilers" for GoT threads. . Not a bad point, but there are lots of folks who choose not to go to Wikipedia (my main source to keep track of characters while I read all the books last summer) or one of the other Song of Ice & Fire wikis out there. -- Tim

When people ask specific questions, like "What the hell is going on with Ser Bruno???", sometimes the only way to answer that is with a SPOILER..Years back, someone asked an AWI uniform question. I facetiously recommended a BOOK, and was ripped to shreds for being an elitist blowhard. So, if a thread title specifically asks what is going on, am I supposed to say "I ain't gonna help you. I read the books and know more than you do!" I can't win! We should have a moratorium on clicking on GoT threads if you don't want any SPOILERS. Don't click! Don't go to Wikipedia. |

I think Trajanus was saying enough with the alerts, not whether there are spoilers.
and using "facetiously" in a sentence might also make you an elitist blowhard. :-P |

Did you know that "facetiously" is the only word in the English language that has ALL the vowels, in correct order? |
