It has to take alot to get banned from SNL. Writers from 2000s seasons surprisingly absent

The Who would definitely have been banned during their heyday, judging by the two musical acts cited as "destructive". I'm surprised that Ashlee Simpson didn't make the list after her lip synch gaffe. Then again, 'SNL' may have seen where her career was heading anyway, so just let it go at that. I certainly remember the infamous Sinéad O'Connor performance. And the author was exactly right in his description of the audience's reaction: you literally could've heard the proverbial "pin" drop in that studio that evening after her on-camera stunt. Weeks later, before she was to perform at another concert, she was viciously booed off the stage. Singer Kris Kristofferson came out to console a sobbing Sinéad while he told her "Don't let the bastards get you down". Whatever. |

Two comments above say what I was going to say. I do miss MAD TV. |

Yeah, SNL has it moments. However, those moments have become a lot less fewer over the years. i think it's one of those shows that should have gone away at least a decade ago. Sorta like Letterman. It just isn't all that funny any longer. Thanks, John |

I occasionally stop while chanel surfing, but rarely for morethan one or two poorly perforemd lines read from cue cards with the 'you all gotta laugh 'cause we're so cool' facial expressions. |

The Elvis Costello incident has always been one of my favorite SNL moments. |

I do miss MAD TV. I'm gonna date myself when I say this, but I miss 'Fridays'. That was one trip of a show! |

It was a favorite of mine at college as well. But then, I was ALWAYS high on Friday night so I was well and truly in the right frame of mind for Fridays. 8)= |

I watched the first show and never missed it up to around 1980 by that time it should have been cancelled. I'm surprised Kaufman is not on that list. |

The Elvis Costello incident has always been one of my favorite SNL moments. I watched it to but it was years later that I found out what had happened. I've seen the clip on youtube of Him coming on while the Beastie Boys were playing, love that one to. |

SNL needs to add a tenth member on their list, Lana del Rey. |

Weeks later, before she was to perform at another concert, she was viciously booed off the stage. Singer Kris Kristofferson came out to console a sobbing Sinéad while he told her "Don't let the bastards get you down". That was the Dylan 30th anniversery concert – one positive thing about it was she screwed up her slot and so didn't get to screw up one of Dylan's songs. If she'd been more coherent about what she was complaining about (the systematic cover up of abuse by catholic clergy) I think (hope ?) she'd have got a more sympathetic hearing. Time has proved her right, unfortunatley. |

I recall the phone-in voting on whether to ban Andy Kaufman or not. And I did get to hear Fear do "New York's All Right (If You Like Saxophones)" years ago on the show. |

SNL needs to add a tenth member on their list, Lana del Rey. Although I haven't watched much SNL in recent years, I did catch her performance and remember wondering, 'Why the hell is this person famous?' It was awful. |

DVR has made SNL a lot better. We watch it on Sundays. Skip the commercials, the bad skits, and lame Musical acts. |

Sinead O'Connor got banned and booed for cutting up a picture of the Pope!!!!!!!????? Wow, sometimes America seems like a different world! |

"If she'd been more coherent about what she was complaining about (the systematic cover up of abuse by catholic clergy) I think (hope ?) she'd have got a more sympathetic hearing. Time has proved her right, unfortunatley." No matter what she may say now, her lttle rant had nothing to do with cover up of abuse. It was simply a cool thing to be anti-Catholic if you were on the political left at the time. |

Wow, sometimes America seems like a different world! It wasn't America, it was Lorne Michaels. But frankly, I would have banned her from my show too, if she did that. BTW, Lorne's a Canadian, as if you couldn't tell by the name, so have a talk with them about it. |
| Cerdic | 15 May 2013 3:38 p.m. PST |
"Banned from my show too."? What happened to freedom of speech? Anyway, I was surprised at the widespread reaction that this apparently caused! If this causes offence, there is loads of British telly that the religiously minded should avoid! |
| Altius | 15 May 2013 4:20 p.m. PST |
1) That's not infringing on her freedom of speech. It's Lorne's show, and if he doesn't want her back, why should she? 2) I'm not religiously minded at all and I've been to your country. I didn't find the tv shows all that scandalous. I have HBO which seems to go out of its way to be scandalous, but there doesn't seem to be much uproar to get that off the air here. |
John the OFM | 17 May 2013 2:05 p.m. PST |
The "freedom of speech" argument only applies when the Government steps in. Private corporations who run the shows can ban whoever they want, and for whatever reason they want. NBC probably told Lorne to do it, if he didn't do it himself. |
John the OFM | 17 May 2013 2:06 p.m. PST |
HBO is not technically "on the air". It is not "broadcast". It is a pay channel, whether on cable or satellite. The FCC has no or little control over it. |
