was everything an Iron man film should be – great action, some really great jokes (not just punching someone in nthe face one-liners), brilliant twist on the bad guy. Loved it. |

I saw this Friday night and I agree with your assessment. The only quibble was that there wasn't so much coherency in the powers of the villains or the Iron Man armor. |

Iron Man Armor is never consistent
each suit is different in some way and a tech prototype. Overall it was a good movie. I am not sure I liked the "main villian" twist. It was good, funny, and yet a let down all at the same time. |

I thought good, funny, and actually made a lot of sense (with the other villains aims). For me it added to the movie. |

I thought it was the best of the 3 so far. |

I love Gwyneth Paltrow
she should be more violent. |

Still with me? OK. The big reveal with the Mandarin was
just ok. In any other movie it would hae been a nice twist, but eventually NOT having a twist becomes the twist. You can almost count on it these days that the terrorist that looks like a terrorist isn't REALLY a terrorist, he's just working for a corporation. In addition to that, Ben Kingsley's character was much too nonchalant about getting caught. He may not be the REAL mandarin, but he still murdered a guy on video didn't he? Finally, the character, The Mandarin, was ill done by. He had his own canon background and was pretty cool all on his own. What they did in IM3 was like having Batman catch the joker only to find out he was an actor working for Harey Dent! I still really enjoyed it, but there could have been some improvements. I DID love Pepper in this movie. When she's all juiced up at the end it's great. |

Continuing a spoiler discussion from the last post so- you know SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT > > > Ok > > > You read the spoiler alert message ? > > > So you've seen the film – or don't care ? > > > So – I can see how that – completely changing the character from the comics – would be annoying. Hell, I hate how they've tampered with Trek in the reboot ! Fortunately, Iron Man was never a comic I followed to any great extent – and I know nothing past about 1985. So, I was in the happy position that it didn't bother me at all. On Ben Kingsley – I thought he was brilliant, considering how little time he has to make the character breath I think he did remarkably well. One has to accept his nonchalance as part of his disconnect from reality. I thought there was some doubt about the shooting – it could be that it was cut in from elsewhere – especially considering his comment on the non-functioning status of the guns. |

I really liked what they did with him. As far as the Iron Man suits, it wasn't consistency between suits, that was fine. It was the inconsistency with the main suit, the Mk 42 or whatever. He falls out of the sky from however far up and smashes into the ground and the suit is damaged but mostly okay. Also an entire building fell on it and again, damaged but okay. Then it gets hit by a bus and falls completely apart? Overall I thought it was probably the best of the three too though. I agree with 20thmaine. |

Definitely worth seeing. My newly posted review here: link To the purist the Mandarin twist may seem heretical, but that villain may come across as too cheesy on screen today. I keep picturing 'Ming the Merciless' from Flash Gordon. Tony Stark's villains are all enemies he's made. First it was a hostile takeover attempt by Obidiah Stane, then it was his chief competitor Justin Hammer. Now it was some hobo he ignored at a New Years' Eve party back in 1999. |

Better than 2, not as exciting as 1. Strip the film of Downey, and you have a whole lot of explosions and not much else. I leave it to you as to whether Downey's screen-time is strong enough to support all the rest of it
That being said: I'll echo the Post's review : "Iron Man 3 feels like an exploitative mulching of present-day anxieties. The script is ambitious but not wise enough to be rightfully cathartic. It's more Cuisinart than art." But kudos to moviereport.com for a cute turn of phrase: "Like the suits Tony Stark pilots by remote throughout the film, it feels like an empty shell, all sleek and shiny and looking the part on the surface but hollow at the core." . To the purist the Mandarin twist may seem heretical, Yes. The original Mandarin was an outstanding character, but too politically Hot-Potato to used as written originally. (Not to mention a forfeit of the chinese box-office receipts). I'd have loved to see his mixture of alien-tech and utter ruthlessness as a springboard to more Avengers: Fin Fang Foom anyone
? but that villain may come across as too cheesy on screen today. I keep picturing 'Ming the Merciless' from Flash Gordon. Or they could have gone in a different topical direction
.
