I'm not quite sure where to begin. I've known more than just a couple of families that aren't very tidy. Not so that they take their meals on stairs. But quite a few eat in front of the TV in the den, or living room. In many of these homes the dining table is somewhat of a catchall. One bunch I used to know used theirs as a laundry distribution center. My Wife and I have always insisted on our family eating at least one meal each day together. Usually supper. And at the dining table, in the dining room. That having been said, it seems that those who are merely untidy aint really misbehaving by that much. |

They want to take their kids? For some that's not a punishment. |

They had (have) a show about hoarders, it was stunning and downright depressing. Threatening to take the kids was the only way one father would agree to cleaning out the house and he left until it was over. It was not enough for some others. |

God how I wish I could jail parents who do this stuff!!! How would that improve the situation? The parents don't need to be jailed, they need to be helped. I'd treat the family like a bankrupt business, and put it into "receivership," as it were. The finances would be locked and placed under the direction of a third party, who must give approval to all expenditures. The parents should have to clean up the home under the supervision of a court-appointed expert, paid out of the family's funds, who determines what stays and what gets tossed. Parenting training would also be a good idea. All of this ends when the parents demonstrate the ability to fulfill their roles in an acceptable and healthy way. From the article, it doesn't appear to be that the parents are cruel or even neglectful; they're just addicted to acquisition of stuff, probably due in part to the mental illness of depression. Stop the former, treat the latter, and the situation will be resolved. |
