I've taken friends through the Donner Pass in California and showed them the trees that are still there that were cut off rather high off the ground in summer, but at 'ground level' that winter due to the depth of the snow.
Then reminded those that needed it that some of them ate the others to survive. Once they get past the 'ick' response I would tell them their lives don't suck so bad as they might.
